Monet to Matisse represents a unique context in which to unite in synergistic harmony two extraordinary collections of art from vastly contrasting locations – Toledo in Ohio and Adelaide. A celebration of the rapid expansion of Western art across a single century, this selection of fifty-seven treasures from Toledo Museum of Art, thoughtfully augmented by works from AGSA’s collection, enables the viewer to explore the plethora of artistic movements that emerged – and faded – during this period. By tracing the arc of the art made over this period, this exhibition demonstrates the ways in which art practice and artists have challenged the status quo and defied traditions established by the art world – at the same time challenging flawed societal structures
