South Australian artist Jordan Gower creates small batch ceramics that reference the rich history of wheel-thrown studio pottery. The AGSA Store has commissioned a limited edition of Shino vases to celebrate the contemporary Japanese ceramics exhibition Pure Form. 
The vases feature a special glaze effect, where the surface is starting to peel back from itself, creating small globules and revealing the clay underneath. A large amount of zinc has been used, increasing the shrinkage of the glaze and producing a dense, white surface. Often seen in traditional Japanese Shino glazes, the effect is known as ‘crawling’ and adds interest to an otherwise simple surface.
